CPCS – Hoist (A20B)

Course Outline
This course is for people who need the skills and knowledge to operate a Hoist.
During this course, you will gain knowledge and understanding of:
- Describing the nature of the sector within the industry and your responsibilities as an equipment operator
- Naming the different types of hoists and have the ability to explain the purpose of the principal components, basic construction and terminology
- Conforming with manufacturer’s requirements as per the operator’s manual, other types of information sources and relevant regulations and guidance
- Explaining the limitations of working a hoist
- Carrying out all pre-use checks
- Undertaking running checks, including gates and safety devices, before being ready for use
- Checking the stability, systems and alignment ensuring the hoist is safe to use
- Check that hoist-way protection is in position before being used
- Checking that the hoist has the capacity for expected loads, equipment and/or passengers
- Carrying out the full emergency lowering and evacuation procedure
- Explaining precautions to be taken for overhead services and other proximity hazards
- Preparing the hoist for the required load(s) and/or passengers
- Identifying the suitability and integrity of loads for transporting and the compatibility with the cage
- Loading and unloading a range of materials, using suitable methods for handling each load type
- Explaining the loading and unloading procedures for varying types of loads
- Explaining the procedures and actions to be taken when transporting people
- Operating the hoist to the end of travel and to various landing levels, loaded and unloaded
- Complying with signals and instructions
- Placing the hoist in an out-of-service condition, isolating and securing it
From the completion of this course, you will receive a CPCS Trained Operator Card (red card) and a CITB National Construction College certificate.
