Course Outline
This course is for individuals who require a formal qualification for operating a 360-degree excavator.
From completing this course you will gain knowledge and understanding of:
- Being able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Gaining a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and responsibilities as a plant operator
- How to safely mount and dismount the machine
- How to conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and the legislative requirements
- How to identify and maintain PPE appropriate for Excavator use
- Conducting all necessary safety checks at the work area
- How to configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely across varying terrain in open and confined areas
- How to start and stop the engine, safely moving the machine off and stopping it safely
- How to load material onto transport vehicles or into containers
- Carrying out excavating tasks
- Manoeuvring the machine to the work area and correctly configuring the machine to carry out excavating tasks
- How to carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
- How to fit and remove attachments
- Reinstating excavation, grade and level ground
For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to do an NVQ qualification. If the CSCS Tested Logo is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last 2 years. AN NVQ must be completed within the next 2 years.
