Course Outline
From completing this course you will learn how to operate a loading shovel safely and productively.
During this course, you will gain knowledge and understanding of:
- Having a basic understanding of the industry, your responsibilities as an operator and the dangers of working in the industry
- Having a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the machine that is being used
- Locating and identifying the major components of the machine and being able to explain their functions
- Locating and identifying key controls and being able to explain their functions
- Conducting all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and their legislative requirements
- Identifying and maintaining PPE that is appropriate for loading shovel use
- Conducting all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Preparing the loading shovel for use and being able to operate machinery safely and efficiently
- Environmental considerations
- The storing and transporting of implements and attachments
- Demonstrating knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for transporting machinery
- Carrying out all end of shift and shut down procedures
For entrants that wish to apply for the NPORS Traditional Card, there is no requirement to do an NVQ qualification. If the CSCS Tested Logo is required on the card, entrants must ensure they have attended and passed the CITB Operatives Health, Safety and Environment Test within the last 2 years. AN NVQ must be completed within the next 2 years.
